Former supervisor to challenge Farley for Senate seat

A former town of Ballston supervisor plans to challenge a longtime state senator in November for his seat.

Patti Southworth, who will run as a Democrat, plans to go up against state Sen. Hugh T. Farley, R-Niskayuna, this November in the 49th State Senate District. The district includes Fulton and Hamilton counties, and western Saratoga County.

Southworth, who was first elected in 2008 to the supervisor position in Ballston, said she decided to run for the state Senate following calls from residents of the district encouraging her to get into the race.

Southworth said this was not the first time she was asked to run for the state Senate.

“The Democrats had asked me to run for the seat held by [former state Senator] Roy McDonald previously,” Southworth said, but she decided against it.

Southworth, who announced she was running over the weekend, said she decided not to run for the Ballston Supervisor position last November due to her plans to run for the state senate.

“I don’t believe you should hold one office and run for another,” Southworth said. “It is very important to put in the time and energy the people deserve.”

Southworth said if she is elected, her primary goals as a state senator would be to focus on creating jobs in the district.

Furthermore, Southworth, who is 54 years old, said she wished to either eliminate or fix Common Core.

“It is detrimental to our students and our teachers,” Southworth said about the Common?Core. “It was rolled out so fast teachers, parents and students were unprepared.”

Farley – who has served in the state Senate since 1976, and was first elected to public office in 1970 – said Monday he was looking forward to the election in November.

“I am running and I am excited about running,” Farley said.

Farley, who is 81 years old, said he was aware of Southworth, but it does not matter much to him who he runs against.

“I take the opponents as I see it,” Farley said.

Farley said he is predicting “a great year for the Republican Senate.”

First elected to public office in 1970, Farley has served the New York State Senate since 1976.

The 49th State Senate District also includes eastern Schenectady County and the northern two-thirds of Herkimer County.
