Section II girls hoop pairings announced

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Johnstown Lady Bills turned a third-place finish in the Foothills Council into a No. 3 seed in the 21-team Section II Class B tournament.

Johnstown finished the season with a 12-6 overall record and will host its opening round game Wednesday at 6 p.m. against the winner of the game between No. 14 Greenville and No. 19 Corinth.

The Fonda-Fultonville Lady Braves (13-5 overall) will also vie for the Class B crown, starting from the No. 5 seed.

The Lady Braves will host its opening round game at 6 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of Saturday’s preliminary round game between No. 12 Hudson and No. 21 Coxsackie-Athens.

Four local girls squads are among the 15 teams battling for the Section II Class C championship.

No. 7 Fort Plain (13-5 overall) will host fellow Western Athletic Conference contender No. 10 Galway Tuesday at 6 p.m. in an opening-round game. The Lady Hilltoppers won both league contests against Galway this season by scores of 49-44 and 68-34. The winner advances to the Class C quarterfinals and will play the winner between No. 2 Maple Hill and No. 15 Duanesburg Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

No. 8 Canajoharie (12-6 overall) also will host an opening round game as it welcomes No. 9 Berne-Knox-Westerlo to Canajoharie High School in the opening game of double-header action starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The two teams met on Monday in a WAC crossover game with the Lady Cougars prevailing 42-32. The winner advances to the quarter final round to play top-seeded Hoosic Valley at Hoosic Valley High School.

The boys’ opening round game between the eight-seeded Cougars and No. 9 Berlin is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

The Mayfield Lady Panthers posted a 10-8 regular season record and were awarded the 11th seed in the Class C tournament. Mayfield will travel to play Central Hudson Valley League champion and No. 6 seed Waterford (17-1) Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the opening game of double-header action at Waterford-Halfmoon High School. No. 5 Waterford will play No. 12 Schoharie in a boys opening-round game scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Northville Lady Falcons (7-11 overall) received the eighth seed in the 13-team Class D bracket and will host No. 9 Germantown (12-5 overall) of the Central Hudson Valley League. The winner will travel to face top-seeded Fort Edward Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Amsterdam Lady Rams finished the regular season with a 9-9 overall record and were awarded the seventh seed in the Class A tournament.

Amsterdam will host its opening round game Wednesday at 6 p.m. against No. 10 Mohonasen. The winner advances to play second-seeded Troy at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Troy High School.

The Class AA championship game will be played at the Times Union Center on March 3 at 6:30 p.m., while the remaining title games will be played at Hudson Valley Community College on March 1 starting with the Class C game at noon.
