Hawks stop Raiders 85-67 in conference contest

JOHNSTOWN – Coming off impressive showings against the region’s first- and second-ranked teams in their last two contests, the Fulton-Montgomery Community College Raiders dropped an 85-67 decision to the region’s third-ranked Mohawk Valley Community College Hawks Sunday.

The Raiders upset the second-ranked Herkimer Generals in overtime Thursday and were in their game against first-ranked SUNY Delhi until the final minutes before losing on Feb. 1. FMCC (8-13 overall) had no such luck Sunday as MVCC (19-5 overall) stormed out to a 21-7 lead.

MVCC went on scoring runs of 8-0 and 9-0 in the early going led by lanky 6’7” forward Phil Carr. Carr dominated down low for the Hawks, getting to the rim at will for 12 first half points before going on to finish with 20 points and eight rebounds.

FMCC’s Carlos Rivera banged a three-pointer for the game’s first bucket, but the Raiders didn’t do much in the way of offense until they were already down by 14. After MVCC’s Tyquan Rolon splashed the Hawks’ second of four first half three-pointers to make the score 24-10, Marquis Edwards hit a jumper that started an 11-3 run for the Raiders. Interrupted by a 3-pointer from MVCC’s Shaquille Mosley, the scoring burst brought FMCC within six.

The Hawks were judicious with their giveaways in the first half. They tallied just two turnovers in the frame while FMCC gave the ball away eight times.

Kadeem Stanislas, FMCC’s do-everything point guard, was extremely effective throughout the ballgame. Stanislas scored 10 first-half points while leading the team in rebounds. After MVCC built their lead back to 14, Stanislas led a late scoring charge to trim FMCC’s deficit to single digits entering halftime. Stanislas hit a jumper at the end of the half to pull the Raiders within nine at 43-34.

After hitting four 3-pointers in the first half, MVCC continued their hot shooting from beyond the arc in the second. Mosley drained two in a row for MVCC near the start of the half before Stanislas and Khaleeq Baum answered with one apiece to keep FMCC’s deficit under 10. The Hawks hit nine triples in the game.

MVCC saw an uptick in turnovers in the second half, but the Hawks put together a run in the later part of the frame that put FMCC away for good. Following four straight points from Stanislas to pull FMCC within eight, the Hawks scored 13 of the next 15 points to take a 19-point lead. Rolon hit from downtown and powered home a dunk during the run. The teams traded baskets down the stretch as MVCC held on for the win.

Stanislas converted nine field goals on his way to a game-high 21 points while Baum added 18 for the Raiders. Both men pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the team. Four Hawks finished with at least 15 points for MVCC including Carr (20), Mosley (20), Lazaro Martinez (19), and Rolon (17).

The Raiders will look to get back on track Wednesday when they hit the road to take on North Country Community College at 7 p.m.
