Garage destroyed in blaze

BROADALBIN-A fire Monday destroyed the garage of town Highway Superintendent Lance Winney, and caused heat damage to his home.

Local fire departments responded around 1:10 p.m. to control the blaze at 284 Stevers Mill Road. The fire destroyed a skidder inside the garage. Winney – who was not home when the fire started – said he had been making repairs to the skidder for his business, Fish House Trucking and Excavating.

According to Broadalbin-Kennyetto Volunteer Fire Chief Scot Hall, the cause of the fire was unknown as of this morning.

Hall said the garage was a total loss. The heat from the fire had begun to peel away the paint on the side of the house, near the garage. Hoses were put on the house, Hall said, saving it from the blaze.

“[The house] is salvageable,” Hall said.

No injuries were reported, but two dogs were let out of the home by a neighbor.

Neighbor Greg Giarrusso said he first saw smoke behind the garage. Giarrusso said at first he thought it was a stove, but grew concerned as the smoke got thicker. Giarrusso said when the fire was discovered, he opened the door to Winney’s home to let the dogs out, in case the fire spread.

Neighbors called in the fire, Hall said, as the Winneys were not home. Crews were working until roughly 2:30 p.m. to control minor hot spots.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing, Hall said.
