Lady Panthers lose to Saratoga Catholic

MAYFIELD – Saratoga Central Catholic’s Kaylie Fish scored 17 points, all in the second half, spurring a 45-37 come-from-behind victory over the Mayfield Lady Panthers in a Western Athletic Conference North Division contest Tuesday at Mayfield High School.

Mayfield (7-8 overall, 5-6 WAC North) stifled the Lady Saints’ top scorer in the first 16 minutes and was able to maintain a lead for the majority of the first half. Saratoga Catholic’s (5-10 overall, 5-9 WAC North) offense struggled while Mayfield used an 8-0 run midway through the first to take a 5-point lead. Kylie Manoogian made back-to-back baskets as part of the run while Julie Hampton sank two free throws. Hampton, Mayfield’s leading scorer, didn’t fair particularly well from the field Tuesday. The sophomore finished with just seven points.

Kaylee Bumpus was active for Mayfield in the second period. Bumpus scored on a putback layup early in the quarter and converted another layup after stealing the ball and taking it coast-to-coast. The forward scored seven points in the first half before finishing with a team-high nine points and 13 rebounds.

With Mayfield still leading early in the third, Fish began to heat up quickly for the Lady Saints. Her first basket was a layup that put Saratoga Catholic up 20-19. Mayfield promptly went on a 7-2 run but Fish sparked a 10-2 Lady Saints run with the first three-pointer of the game for either team. Fish hit again from downtown later in the quarter as Saratoga Catholic took a one-point lead into the fourth.

The third quarter was Mayfield’s worst offensive and defensive quarter of the game. The Lady Panthers got 15 points from seven girls in the frame while giving up 20. Alayna Landolfo hit three jumpers in the quarter to boost Saratoga Catholic.

The Lady Panthers could not carry their offensive rhythm into the final quarter, as Fish single handedly put distance between the two teams. Fish made four baskets for nine points in the fourth, including a three-pointer that served as the final hoop of the game.

Saratoga Catholic’s Emma VanDeCar led all players with 14 rebounds and chipped in 10 points.

Chloe Ethier also pulled down double-digit rebounds for the Lady Saints.

The loss for Mayfield comes despite winning the battle of the boards 42-41 and turning the ball over four fewer times than Saratoga Catholic.

Mayfield won’t have to wait long for a chance to exact revenge on the Lady Saints, as the two teams will meet up again Thursday at Saratoga Catholic for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
