Johnstown wrestlers win third straight

JOHNSTOWN – After starting the season 0-7, the Johnstown wrestling team has been on a roll of late, posting three straight victories.

The Sir Bills notched a 45-22 win over Scotia-Glenville on Wednesday at Johnstown High School to improve to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in Foothills Council matches.

“Things are picking up for us after a rough start to the season,” Johnstown coach Joe Morrison said.

Johnstown won eight of 12 weight classes on its way to the win, rallying from an early 16-0 deficit.

Scotia-Glenville’s Kyle Merritt opened the match by collecting a forfeit at 152 pounds before James Herschberger pinned Johnstown’s Joe Salatel in 5:53 at 160 pounds to give the Tartans a 12-0 lead.

Shawn Leonard pushed the Tartans’ advantage to 16-0 with a 15-2 major decision over the Sir Bills’ Jeremiah Robinson at 170 pounds.

Johnstown began its rally at 182 pounds when Austin Brand pinned Max Martin in 36 seconds for the Sir Bills’ first win of the night.

Brand’s pin was the first of three straight for Johnstown, as Austin Manchester pinned Scotia-Glenville’s Eli Dixon in 1:06 at 195 pounds and Ethan Hale pinned Jim Azzarella in 58 seconds at 220 pounds.

Hale’s pin gave Johnstown an 18-16 lead, which was extended to 24-16 after Garrett Hadcock collected a forfeit win at 285 pounds.

Hailey Finn stopped the Sir Bills’ win streak at four by earning a forfeit win at 99 pounds, making it 24-22.

Finn’s victory was the final one of the night for Scotia-Glenville, as Johnstown won the final four matches.

“We’re looking to stay in the groove of things with sectionals coming up quickly,” Morrison said. “The guys are wrestling well right now. We just want to keep working and keep our wrestling room healthy.”

After a double forfeit at 106 pounds, Kyle Linart (113 pounds) and Nate Dutcher (120) earned forfeit wins for the Sir Bills.

Following double forfeits at 126 and 132 pounds, Anthony Mowrey outlasted the Tartans’ Jli Rivera-Lathrop, 11-8, at 138 pounds.

Johnstown, which has won four of its last five contests, will host Amsterdam next Wednesday at 6 p.m.

“Next week, we face Amsterdam here and that’s a while different story,” Morrison said. “They always have a tough team and they do again this year. We’ve got some work to do to get ready.”
