Sewer board awards more than $62K in equipment bids

JOHNSTOWN – The Gloversville-Johnstown Joint Sewer Board recently awarded more than $62,000 worth of equipment and vehicle bids for use at the sewer plant.

Gloversville-Johnstown Wastewater Treatment Facility Engineer Tyler Masick requested the board award a Hoffman Blower overhaul bid to Associated Electro Mechanics Inc. of Springfield, Mass., for $32,712.

He said the sewage treatment plan has a planned capital project to rebuild the blower for the aeration system. He said Associated Electro Mechanics’ bid was the lowest of two received. The board awarded the bid.

The board also awarded a $29,587 bid to Mangino Chevrolet in Amsterdam for a hybrid vehicle. Masick said the Chevy Volt is also in the capital plan, and the hybrid will be replacing an existing Chevrolet Impala. The new vehicle operates on electricity with a range of 40 miles, he said.

The board received two residential sewer bill protests, according to Fiscal Manager Donna Renda.

She said the first was at 83 Fremont St., Gloversville, which was granted a credit of $543.87. Renda said a broken spigot outside the house was covered up by a tenant. The owner was unaware of an issue that resulted in 45,673 cubic feet of water released. She said Masick investigated and found the discharge was outside, with no other leaks.

Renda said the water at the Fremont Street home was beyond control and didn’t come to the sewer plant to be treated.

But the board did deny the other residential sewer bill protest from 55 North East Ave., Johnstown. The protest indicated an outside tap was left running, Renda said. Masick asked to inspect, but the homeowner denied him access, she said.

The board also approved a resolution to carry over 2013 encumbered purchase orders amounting to $430,996 to 2014. The largest order carried over for this year amounted to $383,225 from Precision Industrial Maintenance for the facility’s ongoing main trunk sewer line rehab project.
