Canajoharie resident new undersheriff
FONDA – A Canajoharie resident will be the new undersheriff in Montgomery County, according to a news release.
Montgomery County Sheriff Michael J. Amato announced he is appointing Peter A. Vroman, of Canajoharie, to the position. Vroman will start working in his new job Friday, the release said.
Vroman recently retired after serving 28 years as a deputy U.S. marshal for the United States Marshal Service, the release said. He has been in law enforcement since 1982.
Vroman served as the liaison for federal inmate housing and logistics at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility for many years, the release said. He served more than 30 correctional facilities in his district, the release said.
Vroman will replace Undersheriff Jeffrey Smith, who retired and is now the Montgomery County Emergency Management director.
Amato said he’s known Vroman for years and thinks Vroman will be an asset to the sheriff’s office.
“[Vroman] has been coming into the Montgomery County Correctional Facility for about 20 years now,” Amato said. “He knows how to deal with federal prisoners. He’s very knowledgeable in this field. He has a lot of contacts with the federal government, and he’s got contacts with 30 sheriffs’ offices, their undersheriffs and their deputies. He’ll be very valuable to us.”
