FMCC men fall short against Generals, 90-68

JOHNSTOWN – The Fulton-Montgomery Community College Raiders couldn’t overcome a disastrous first half as they dropped their fourth straight game, 90-68, to the Herkimer Generals Thursday.

Jonathan Feiler and the Generals embarrassed FMCC on the offensive end of the floor in the first 20 minutes. Herkimer went on four distinct scoring runs that helped them to a 22-point lead entering the locker room.

Feiler, who poured in 15 of his 21 points in the first 10 minutes of the game, keyed two early scoring bursts for Herkimer. The Generals got four from Feiler and five from Enson Garcia as part of an 11-3 run that put them up 13-5. After a triple from FMCC’s Kenny Barr, Feiler scored seven of Herkimer’s next nine as part of a 9-0 run.

Charles Reese began to percolate from downtown for Herkimer later in the half. Reese hit two three-pointers amidst another run that pushed the Generals’ lead to 36-18.

The Raiders tried their hardest to get the ball into the hands of Khaleeq Baum under the basket in the early going, to no avail. Baum, a starting forward, was held scoreless in the first half but did pull down five rebounds.

Herkimer’s offensive onslaught was spurred by a slew of FMCC mistakes. The Raiders turned the ball over 15 times in the half, while forcing just six Herkimer turnovers. The Generals went on a 12-2 scoring run in the final minutes of the half.

While Herkimer’s offense was unstoppable throughout, FMCC came through with a strong offensive showing of their own in the final 20 minutes. Barr and Dondre Davis each nailed threes in the early going to cut into the deficit, but Garcia proceeded to go off for Herkimer. Garcia splashed thrice from beyond the arc and scored 11 of Herkimer’s first 13 points of the quarter.

The Raiders were successful getting shots at the rim as the half progressed. Kyle Giddings scored seven points in the frame as he bullied his way down low. Baum and Marquis Edwards also scored seven points in the half and Barr added eight, but Herkimer’s timely outside shooting kept them up big. The Generals hit six three-pointers in the half to finish with 11 in total.

Barr was FMCC’s high-point man, finishing with 22 while chipping in 6 rebounds. Four Generals finished in double figures, including Garcia, Feiler, Reese and Wendall Williams. Jerrell Hunter led Herkimer (10-3 overall) with seven boards.

The Raiders (3-7 overall), who haven’t won since Nov. 24, will look to tally a victory when they face the Hawks of Mohawk Valley on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Utica.
