Queensbury rolls past Gloversville girls
GLOVERSVILLE – The Queensbury girls’ basketball team kept its Foothills Council record perfect Saturday with a dominating 69-11 victory over host Gloversville on Saturday at Gloversville High School.
The Lady Spartans (4-0 Foothills, 6-1 overall) wasted little time getting into the flow of the game as Jill Davis put their first points of the game on the board 8 seconds after the tip off.
Stacia Griesemer cut the lead in half with her successful free throw two minutes in, but Queensbury responded with a 17-0 run before Angela DiMarco delivered Gloversville’s first field goal of the game with 1:21 left in the opening quarter.
However, the Lady Dragons (0-4 Foothills) could not add to their total and finished the period on the short end of the 25-3 score.
Griesemer delivered all three of Gloversville’s second-quarter points on a field goal and a free throw, but the Queensbury reserves put up 13 second-quarter points to build a 38-6 halftime advantage.
Davis and the Lady Spartans starters returned to the floor in the third quarter and the senior connected for 10 of Queensbury’s 11 points in the period.
Emily Washburn connected for four points for Gloversville and Griesemer added her third successful free throw of the game but the Lady Dragons trailed 49-11 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
With the starters on the bench, Queensbury held Gloversville scoreless in the final period, while hitting a pair of 3-pointers en route to a 20-point quarter to finalize the 69-11 league victory.
Davis, who entered the game averaging 18 points a game, finished with 20 points in two quarters of play. Aisling McAllister came off the bench to join her in double-digits with 16 points and Kristen O’Connor added nine points.
Griesemer finished with five points for the Lady Dragons, while Washburn had four and DiMarco two to round out Gloversville’s scoring.
“After being off since Monday we didn’t play too bad,” Gloversville coach Robyn Guzielek said. “We got some good shots off and even though the scoreboard doesn’t reflect it defensively, we played OK. We are showing signs of improvement and knowing what we are doing on the floor. That is what we are looking for.”
Gloversville will return to the court Tuesday night with a road game against Scotia-Glenville. The Lady Tartans kept pace with Queensbury with a 55-44 win over South Glens Falls to also remain undefeated in the Foothills.
Queensbury will look to keep its league record perfect when it hosts South Glens Falls on Tuesday.
