Cynthia B. Gillmore

Cynthia B. Gillmore, age 85, of Johnstown, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on February 19, 1928, in Brunswick, Maine, a daughter of the late Donald Atherton Brown and Edith Adele Sadler Brown.

Cynthia graduated from Bergenfield High School in New Jersey, earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey, and received her master’s degree in counseling from SUNY Oneonta and her administrative certificate from SUNY Albany. She started her career in education as an elementary teacher in Johnstown and then moved to the Gloversville Enlarged School District, first as a guidance counselor and then in various other administrative positions, retiring on July 1, 1995. Cynthia was on the original Board of Directors for the Family Counseling Center, a member of AARP, AAUW of Gloversville, Johnstown and Amsterdam and Business and Professional Women (serving as treasurer for seven years). She was a member of the New York State Association of Comprehensive Education (treasurer for 25 years), counsel for Exceptional Children and various other community and professional organizations. Cynthia was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Johnstown and a choir member of many years.

Mrs. Gillmore is survived by three daughters Candace G. Thompson of Gloversville, Karen G. (Glenn) Sackett of North Carolina, Kathryn G. (Jay) Smigen of Niskayuna; six grandchildren, Brandon P. Thompson of North Carolina, Shannon K. Smigen of New York City, Sara E. Smigen of Niskayuna, Dr. Hillary M. Sackett of Vermont, Hannah S. (Charles) Wiley and Heather L. Sackett, both of North Carolina, one great-grandchild, Felicity R. Thompson of North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.

Cynthia was predeceased by her husband, John Harmon Gillmore, whom she married on May 27, 1950. He passed on October 30, 2013. She also was predeceased by her brother David Gregory Brown, who passed on December 26, 1993, and sister Judith Ann Brown Fechner, who passed on February 27, 2004.

A memorial service and visitation will be conducted in the spring at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main Street, Johnstown.

Interment will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
