George R. Hayes

Mr. George R. Hayes, age 70, passed away peacefully at his Ephratah home on Friday evening, December 13, 2013, with Pam Durfee and his faithful Rottie, Max, at his side.

George was born on May 22, 1943, in Gloversville, the son of Harry “Jake” and Mabel Johnson Hayes, who are both now deceased. He served with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. He was employed by Karg Brothers and the U.S. Postal Service before owning the Brookside Tavern and Hayes Paving, both in Ephratah, NY. He retired in 2006.

George was a motorcycle flat-track racer and never lost his love for motorcycles and the freedom they provide. He now rides the wind. He was an avid hunter and will now roam with the buffalo.

He is survived by his children, Richard Hayes (Sheri) of Dolgeville, George Hayes of North Carolina and Leanne Hayes; three grandchildren, Michael Hart (Carrie) of Ephratah, Kyle Hayes of Dolgeville and Garret Hayes of Johnstown; a great-grandson, Dylan Hart; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves many friends and acquaintances who he considered family, including Al and Bonnie Leach and Dave and Chris Uebrick.

Cremation will take place at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. George asked that a celebration of his life take place in the spring or summer of 2014.
