Property auction nets county $34K

JOHNSTOWN – Fulton County government’s annual 2013 online public property auction gained more than $34,000 this year – a stark contrast to an $87,000 loss last year.

The Board of Supervisors’ Finance Committee on Monday morning reviewed results of the special auction of certain county-owned tax-acquired parcels at the County Office Building. The full board authorized sale of the properties in the afternoon.

County Administrative Officer Jon Stead noted the annual online county auction ended Nov. 22.

“Fourteen parcels went out to auction,” Stead said. “Several of them were landlocked and oddballs.”

He said eight properties had no bids and remain unsold, but six properties were sold for a total county gain of $34,027 – total purchase prices above taxes owed on the properties. The county’s online auction in November 2012 sustained an $87,025 loss.

Fulton County also had a successful traditional public property auction June 19 at the Holiday Inn, meeting tax delinquencies and earning the county an additional $320,883. Haroff Auction & Realty Inc. of Schroon Lake, Essex County, auctioned off 80 county parcels at that event.

Online auction results for 2013 with purchase prices and bidders were as follows: city of Gloversville, 11 Eagle St., Regina Gallagher – $8,000; town of Johnstown, Route 29A, Eric Berend – $2,750; three town of Johnstown properties on Marvin Street, Mohamed Alek – $25 each; and town of Perth, 1322 County Highway 107, Green Road LLC – $34,000.

Officials said the eight properties not sold in the auction represent repeat auction parcels that have been presented several times in the past.

“There are a few [properties] that just aren’t anything,” Stead said.

He said county Treasurer Terry Blodgett is thinking of putting those eight unsold properties on the tax-exempt rolls.
