Lady Falcons cruise past OESJ, 59-31
NORTHVILLE – The Northville Lady Falcons led the Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville Lady Wolves by 16 points after one quarter and never relented on their way to a 59-31 victory Tuesday.
The Lady Falcons (2-2) were active on defense from the very start, making it hard for the winless Lady Wolves (0-4) to find open shots. Northville jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Kirsten Raux scored OESJ’s first basket of the game.
It was all Northville from that point forward as 5’11” Charlotte Kalkbrenner got inside for six straight points to give the Lady Falcons a 13-2 lead. Mary Ryan drained a 3-pointer shortly after and Lyndsey Wadsworth made her second layup of the quarter to give Northville a 16-point lead after eight minutes.
Jessica Hagedorn was freed up and converted two open jump shots in the second quarter for OESJ, including a three-pointer, but Northville’s defensive pressure frequently made it difficult for the Lady Wolves to progress the ball past half court. Morgan Wilson scored six points in the quarter for Northville and the Lady Falcons scored the final nine points overall. Their ability to intercept inbound passes took the ball out of OESJ’s hands and propelled the Lady Falcons to a 33-9 lead at the break.
OESJ looked like a different team in the third quarter.
After Northville scored seven of the first nine points of the half, OESJ went on a 12-0 run to make the score 40-23. Rylie Smith hit two threes during the run and scored eight points overall in the quarter.
The Wolves took advantage of second-chance opportunities at the rim and exhibited better ball movement than they had shown in the first half. The result was open shots that OESJ converted with high efficiency.
The Lady Wolves outscored Northville 20-13 in the third. Ryan drained another three-pointer for Northville in the frame and Wadsworth drove into the lane for three easy baskets.
Wadsworth scored six more points in the final quarter, as OESJ seemed to lose its offensive rhythm. Smith made one jumper for the Lady Wolves in the quarter as the Lady Falcons cruised to the 28-point win.
Wadsworth and Kalkbrenner combined for 33 Northville points, while Meghan Laport and Wilson chipped in nine apiece. Smith scored 10 for OESJ.
Neither team got to the foul line much on Tuesday. Northville made two of eight free throws attempted while OESJ went 2-for-5 from the stripe.
The Lady Falcons will have a full week away from the court. Their next game is Tuesday at home against the Mayfield Lady Panthers. OESJ will look to tally their first win of the season when they welcome Mayfield to St. Johnsville on Friday.
