William Robert Peck
William Robert Peck, 88, of Gloversville, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Amsterdam, surrounded by his loving family.
A lifelong resident of Gloversville, William was born on November 22, 1924, the son of the late Clarence and Alice Peck.
He graduated from Gloversville High School in 1942, and then proudly served his country by enlisting in the U.S, Air Force. He was a bomber pilot during WW II flying B-24 Liberators. Following his honorable discharge, William graduated from Nichols Business College in Massachusetts and then from Cornell University with a degree in horticulture.
Returning home following college, William entered into the family business and later became owner and operator of Peck’s Flowers until his retirement in 1988.
Mr. Peck was married to his loving wife of 64 years, Suzanne Breese Peck, who he was united in marriage in 1949.
He enjoyed summers at Canada Lake and winters at Big Pine Key, Florida, as well as golfing and fishing. He was active in CLPA (Canada Lake Protective Association), he was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gloversville and the United Methodist Church in Big Pine Key, Fla. He was a member of the Eccentric Club, Gloversville Kiwanis and the Nick Stoner Golf Course, where he started as a golf caddie in the 1930s. William was also a former member of the board of the Gloversville Federal Savings and Loan.
Besides his devoted wife, Suzanne, William is survivied by his children, Katherine Peck (Charlie) of Westwood, N.J., Irene Hess (Bernie) of Fort Collins, Colo., Robert Peck (Sally) of Northville, N.Y., Margaret Smith (Ray) of Ballston Lake, N.Y. and Elizabeth Oathout (David) of Canada Lake, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne E. Coates.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2013, at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, where a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., with the Pastor Richard Klueg officiating. Burial will take place in Prospect Hill Cemetery at a later date.
