Monuments must be open

Sometimes, our elected and appointed government officials just do not think. It happened just a few weeks ago, during the so-called “government shutdown.”

Of all that occurred during that period, most Americans were upset and outraged at attempts to close to the public some of the memorials and monuments our nation has erected to honor veterans of military service.

You may have seen pictures, stories and video of what happened at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. There, aging veterans were told the monument was closed to them.

They went in, anyway. National Park Service rangers told to keep the veterans out instead shook their hands.

Never again. These men and women fought for us – not for politicians. Their monuments should never be closed to them for any reason.
