Proposed budget carries tax hike

CAROGA – The proposed town budget for 2014 carries a 4-cent increase in the tax rate and a $70,000 increase in appropriations.

According to the proposed budget, appropriations total to $2.1 million, an increase over 2013’s $2.03 million.

According to information provided by the town, the implied tax rate for 2012 was $7.23 per $1,000 of assessed property value, taking into account the fire, highway and general funds. The total tax rate for 2013 is $6.92, which includes an 88-cent fire tax. The proposed tax rate for 2014 totals $6.96 per $1,000.

Town Clerk Linda Gilbert said the town will have a public hearing Wednesday during the monthly board meeting. The board will vote on the budget following the hearing.
