Arlene Adamec McGowan
Arlene Adamec McGowan, of County Highway 110, Broadalbin, died Saturday morning, November 9, 2013, at Mountain Valley Hospice House following a brief illness.
She was born in Gloversville on June 10, 1918, the daughter of Conant and Myra Sleezer Miller and was a 1936 graduate of Gloversville High School. Arlene continued her education at Gloversville Business School, and in 1938 she moved to Broadalbin where she has since resided.
Arlene was employed at General Electric in Schenectady following the death of her first husband in 1951. Later, she worked as a bookkeeper at the Robert J. Hoy Agency and then went on to work at Korkay Industries, retiring in 1985.
Arlene was a member of the Broadalbin United Methodist Church and a former officer of the American Legion Auxiliary. She also belonged to the Broadalbin Kennyetto Historical Society and the Broadalbin Senior Citizens.
Arlene always loved a party and was most happy spending time with family and friends, and especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On April 4, 1942, she was married to George E. Adamec. He was killed in January 1951 during the Korean War. In addition to her first husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Beulah Eglinton, who died in 1992.
Survivors include her husband, Harold R. “Jake” McGowan, whom she married on August 30, 1957; a son, G. Paul (Joyce) Adamec of Broadalbin; two daughters, Joan Adamec (Skip) Harris and Sally (Frank) Clemente, all of Broadalbin; six grandchildren, Jill Fahmy, Kim DeLuca, Kelli Garritano, Kyle Harris, Brian Clemente, and Meghan Clemente; eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cremation will be performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. A graveside service will be held at the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Ecumenical Food Pantry, Kennyetto Volunteer Fire Company, or to Mountain Valley Hospice, all in care of the funeral home.
