Step up and help out local little league
Having just finished my term as president of Gloversville Little League, I would like to thank the community, parents and volunteers for your support, while encouraging everyone to continue the momentum we have started with our Revitalize Parkhurst Field campaign.
Opened in 1906 as A,J&G Park, Parkhurst Field has been the home of MLB exhibition games featuring future Hall of Fame players, Negro League and local baseball teams and the home of GLL since 1955.
The infrastructure of our park was more than 50 years old and in need of repair to return the park to its original glory. In 2012, GLL’s board launched an ambitious plan that featured multiple phases of volunteer work and financial commitment from many entities. We received a number of commitments from local grants, private citizens and local companies.
GLL owns our facility, uses no public tax money, and our operations are self-sustaining each year. It costs more than $50,000 a year to operate the league. With these financial commitments, we were able to install a new backstop and fencing on the minor field and both T-ball fields, new fencing on the softball field and the outfield of the majors field. What fencing was not replaced was completely refurbished and repainted. In August, we leveled and rebuilt the minor and major infields by replacing infield dirt with a state-of-the-art composite mixture. We built new restrooms on the softball field and have repainted and repaired our concession stand and every dugout. We will replace the roof on our concession stand and have built a museum onsite to celebrate the rich history at our park. But, we have much work left to do.
In the coming months, businesses will receive letters asking to donate through sign or team sponsorships. Individuals will be asked to volunteer as board members, coaches and workers for 2014. I encourage you to not ignore those requests and to get involved in any way you can, for it takes the whole community’s efforts to put together a successful program for the children.
Generations have fond memories of GLL. As ex-GLL star Chris Ciaccio wrote recently, “Great things happen when passion and conviction collide. Thank you to all individuals whose efforts have helped solidify that GLL will continue to be a right of passage for generations…”
I thank you for the opportunity to serve as president and for your continued support.
