GOP candidate can’t accept post

GLOVERSVILLE – The Republican candidate for the Ward 5 Supervisor position will no longer be in the area to accept the seat if he is elected next week, officials said.

Matthew S. Myers will no longer be available to serve after taking a job outside the area, Fulton County Republican Chairwoman Susan McNeil said.

“He is going to be leaving the area,” McNeil said. “He is going to be missed, but the young man has the opportunity of a lifetime in front of him, and he’s moving forward with it.”

Two independent candidates, Gregory Young on the Community line and Michael R. Rooney on the Moderate line are on the ballot against Myers.

Fulton County Board of Elections officials said Myers will remain on the ballot for the election next week although he would need to step down if elected.

The Common Council could appoint a replacement to the position or leave the position open until the 2014 election.

The position is now held by Michael Ponticello. He did not run for re-election, choosing instead to run for mayor. He was defeated in the primary by incumbent Mayor Dayton King.
