Broadalbin man killed in Mayfield crash

MAYFIELD – A Broadalbin man was killed early Sunday after being ejected from a car that crashed into a utility pole.

The vehicle was traveling westbound on County Highway 155 near Route 30 around 2 a.m. when the driver failed to make a turn at a curve and crashed into the pole before landing on its side on a lawn adjacent to the roadway, state police said in a news release.

Justin DePaula, 34, of Broadalbin, and Melissa Vincent, 38, of Broadalbin, were ejected from the vehicle, police said. DePaula was declared dead at the scene. According to Fulton County District Attorney Louise Sira, Vincent is now in serious condition at Albany Medical Center.

Police said they do not know was driving the vehicle. Sira said it is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation by the state police accident reconstruction team. State Police spokesman Mark Ciepel could not be reached for comment this morning, and troopers at state police barracks in Fonda and Mayfield were unable to comment on the accident this morning.
