JOHNSTOWN – For four days, Grandma Millie’s Bakery underwent a makeover as part of production of the TLC show “Bakery Boss,” hosted by “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro.
On Sunday, more than 1,500 spectators showed up at the bakery at the Fulton County Airport for the “reveal” of the remodeling done to the family-owned business.
Cars lined the entrance road to the airport and parked along Route 67 as the production crew passed out release forms, allowing people to be filmed for the show.
After the finishing touches were put on Sunday’s filming inside the bakery, members of the crowd were escorted from their cars to the bakery building. They formed a line that extended from the front of the building and stretched along a runway beside the building.
The first upgrades visible were a redesigned sign and logo hung on the outside of the building and at the entrance to the airport. A new delivery vehicle was parked alongside the bakery featuring a bright blue color scheme and a caricature of the bakery’s co-owner, Chauncey McCormick, holding a pie while piloting a plane.
About 4:30 p.m., Valastro and the McCormick family came out on the front porch area of the bakery and thanked the people for their support.
Valastro then called to the cheering crowd, “Come on in. We’re open for business.”
Inside, the building had a fresh coat of paint and upgrades to the eating and kitchen areas.
The McCormick family signed non-disclosure agreements to not reveal the changes until after the show airs.
New products introduced to the new menu, along with the bakery’s popular favorites, were available for the fans during the reveal. Valastro also took time to greet and talk with fans.
The TLC show “Bakery Boss” will show how Valastro helps struggling family bakeries get back on their feet, said Dustin ?Smith, vice president of communications for the TLC network.
Smith said the new show features struggling bakeries across the country. He said Grandma Millie’s was selected for its compelling personal story. He said the family “truly needed Buddy to help turn their business around.”
“This show looks at their entire operations,” Smith said. “Their menu, the look and feel of the bakery itself and the family dynamic. Buddy helps them navigate that in addition to updating their equipment and the look and feel of their business and designing the menu.”
Grandma Millie’s leases space at the Fulton County Airport, which is off Route 67 on County Highway 153. The business is co-owned by McCormick and her sons Jason and Scott. Jason and his wife, Ellen, who specializes in cake designs, are graduates of the Culinary Institute of America.
The building has been the site of many restaurants over the years, starting with the former B-29 Cafe in the 1990s. The bakery business has been at the airport for more than two years.
During the four-day filming, the production staff used the services of local businesses such as Chef Lomanto’s in Gloversville to cater lunches as well as purchase materials for the makeover.
“Bakery Boss” will premiere Dec. 2. Smith said he doesn’t know when the Grandma Millie’s episode will be aired.
Valastro visited a festival in downtown Johnstown on Saturday and talked with local residents.
