Boys Soccer Roundup: Canajoharie moves on

SCOTIA – After battling through regulation. two overtime sessions and 12 penalty kicks, the Canajoharie boys soccer team emerged with an victory to advance in a Section II Class C tournament play-in game.

Jordan Ahlquist scored early for Mekeel Christian and the Cougars got the equalizer in the second half when Gordon Trahan headed home a director kick from Logan Sala.

The teams remained tied through overtime and the first round of penalty kicks. Canajoharie goalkeeper Sam May, the sixth shooter, converted on his penalty kick and the attempt by Mekeel Christian’s Tyler Guido’s hit the post to advance Canajoharie in the tournament.

Besides hitting the winning penalty kick, May had 16 saves in net, while Jakob Kahler had eight stops for the Lions.

Canajoharie travels to take on top-seeded Lake George at 3 p.m. Friday.

Class B Play-in

Fonda-Fultonville 1, Mechanicville 0

MECHANICVILLE – Goalkeepers Tyler Folmsbee for Fonda-Fultonville and Logan Polzinello of Mechanicville kept their respective teams in the hunt with spectacular saves in regulation.

However, the Braves were able to break through in overtime to advance in the Section II Class B tournament.

Midway through the first overtime session, Ryan Park broke through the Mechanicville defense and placed a close-range shot off the post and into the net for the 1-0 victory.

Fonda-Fultonville outshot Mechanicville 21-13 for the match, while Folmsbee came up with seven saves and Polzinello 13 in goal.

The Braves advance to face second-seeded Schalmont at 3 p.m. Friday at Schalmont High School.
