Gordon L. Demarest

Gordon L. Demarest, age 60, of Gloversville, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on March 17, 1953, in Gloversville, the son of William Demarest and Marie Christoff Demarest.

Gordon was employed for over 30 years at Time Warner Cable. He was a volunteer Class A firefighter for the Pleasant Square Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Demarest also served as chief and assistant chief and was currently holding the office of captain-senior officer with the fire department. Gordon was honored with the Fireman of the Year Award for 2012 by the department. Mr. Demarest was a Church Council member, past vice president and deacon at Grace Lutheran Church, Johnstown, serving in a variety of capacities at the time of his passing. He was a first responder, driver and board member of the Fulton County Ambulance Service and also served as a Gloversville Enlarged School District board member for a three-year term.

Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Nancy Waffle Demarest; two sons, Gregory Kowalczyk and his wife, Lynn Trevett-Kowalczyk, and Richard Kowalczyk; two daughters, Mona Kowalczyk (Steve Ellis) and Barbara Insognia and her fiance, T.C. Eddards; nine grandchildren, Kaela (Matt Elcock), Alexis, Emily, Garrett, Seth, Derrick, Sabrina, Peter and Geordan; two sisters, Carol Demarest Beekman and her husband, Lorenzo of Johnstown and Norma Demarest of Harwich, Massachusetts; one goddaughter and niece, Angel Spencer (Georgia); two nieces, Lavina Town and Jenny Knowlton; and several great-nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, at Grace Lutheran Church, 1 West Montgomery Street, Johnstown, NY 12095.

Friends and family may call today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main Street, Johnstown.

Interment will be in North Bush Cemetery, Caroga Lake.
