Arbutus M. ‘Artie’ Peters Brown
Mrs. Arbutus M. “Artie” Peters Brown, age 85, of Gloversville, died Friday, October 4, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Amsterdam.
She was born May 20, 1928, in Hope, N.Y., the daughter of the late Henry Peters Sr. and Lillian Sanborn Peters.
Artie attended Wells School and graduated from there in 1948. She then came to Gloversville and worked at the former Kresge’s Store until 1952. She worked for 25 years as F.W. Woolworth Company where she retired in 1993 as lunch counter manager. She loved to cook for her family a do volunteer work at her church.
She was an active member of the Church of the Holy Spirit where she was a bingo worker and member of The Sisters of the Holy Spirit. She was also a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Albany, TOPS 789 of Gloversville and the AARP.
Artie was married to Rawland G. Brown on November 3, 1951. Mr. Brown died December 18, 2009.
She is survived by three children, Debra Tubbs (Victor) of Johnstown, Charles Brown (Julie) of Dudley, Mass. and Eric Brown (Arlene) of Perth; six grandchildren, Joshua, Jessica, Jaclyn and Julie Brown of Dudley, Mass. and Alicia and Justin Brown of Gloversville; three brothers, David Peters of Albany, Harold Peters of Hope and Nelson Peters of Northville; several nieces and nephews.
Artie was predeceased by three brothers, Benjamin, Henry and Hugh Peters.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 6, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St., Gloversville. The Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak will be the celebrant.
Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.
