H.S. Volleyball Roundup: Johnstown places second at tourney
QUEENSBURY – Host Queensbury defeated Johnstown in the championship match of the Queensbury Tournament on Saturday.
The Spartans won 2-1, rallying to win the final two games 28-26 and 15-10 after losing the first game 25-20.
Voorheesville finished third, Mayfield was fourth and South Glens Falls was fifth.
In the semifinals, Johnstown defeated Mayfield, 2-0, by scores of 25-12 and 25-19, while Queensbury reached the finals with a 2-1 win over Voorheesville by scores of 28-26, 22-25 and 15-12.
Johnstown went 8-0 in pool play, while Queensbury and Voorheesville each went 5-3. Mayfield was 2-6 in pool play and South Glens Falls was 0-8.
Queensbury’s Katelyn Ripley finished the day with 37 kills and 21 digs, while Kristen O’Connor had 54 digs and eight aces. Stephanie Gengel registered 79 assists and seven aces for Queensbury, Mary Rahal had 12 kills, and Courtney Keys and Mara Bureau each had 11 kills.
Bulldog Blast Invitational
BERNE – Cambridge won the team title at the first Bulldog Blast Invitational Tournament at Berne-Knox-Westerlo.
The Indians defeated the host Bulldogs in the championship match 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 23-25 and 25-16.
Cambridge’s Cassidy Warnke was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Cambridge’s Roz Saunders was named to the all-tournament team, along with Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s Shannon Stone.
BKW went 7-1 in pool play, while Cambridge went 5-3. Amsterdam and Hadley-Luzerne each went 4-4 in pool play, while Albany Leadership went 0-8.
Amsterdam’s Cassidy Arocho was named to the all-tournament team. She was joined on the all-tourney team by Hadley-Luzerne’s Taylor Hay and Albany Leadership’s Kadeara Smith.
Fonda-Fultonville 3, Ichabod Crane 1
VALATIE – Shawna Trigg finished with 25 service points and five aces to lead Fonda-Fultonville to a 3-1 win over Ichabod Crane in a Colonial Council contest Friday.
The Lady Braves lost the first game 26-24 before rebound to win the final three games by scores of 30-28, 25-22 and 25-12.
Miranda Nethaway added seven kills and two blocks for the Lady Braves.
Schoharie 3, Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville 2
ST. JOHNSVILLE – Victoria Mueller had 11 kills and two blocks, leading Schoharie to a five-game win over Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville on Friday.
The Indians won by scores of 23-25, 25-27, 26-24, 25-17 and 25-17.
Gabrielle Danthine had nine kills and two blocks for Schoharie (3-2 overall, 3-1 WAC), while Emily Pieniazek had 15 assists.
Shelbey McCumber had six assists, five digs and four aces for Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville. Melissa Crapser posted four kills, four digs and three aces for the Lady Wolves, Shamrin Flanders had eight digs, three aces and two kills, and Katie Pabis posted nine digs, four kills and four aces.
