United Way plans campaign

JOHNSTOWN – The United Way of Fulton County is planning its 2013-14 Community Campaign.

United Way of Fulton County Executive Director Lisa Pfeiffer said the organization has set a fundraising goal of $150,000.

With the 2012-13 campaign drawing to a close, the final checks and donations are still coming in, Pfeiffer said.

“We’re still collecting, but I’m cautiously optimistic that we are going to exceed $160,000,” Pfeiffer said.

The local United Way provides funding for 14 agencies in the county.

Pfeiffer said all the money raised stays in Fulton County and is spent on programs such as Catholic Charities, Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Glove Theater, Salvation Army and Community Maternity.

The United Way chooses organizations to help before the fundraising campaign begins.

“We have a funding season where we accept grant programs for the United Way,” Pfeiffer said.

The campaign officially will begin Sept. 25 with a kickoff breakfast at the Holiday Inn on North Comrie Avenue.

The breakfast will start at 7:30 a.m. It will be the first of several fundraising events.

Pfeiffer said the event will require reservations. To RSVP, call 725-9817.

Pfeiffer said multiple fundraising events are planned in the coming months, including a fundraiser involving Applebees in October, a Bike Night at Pour Jim’s in November, a skating event in February and a theater night in April.

Other events also are in the works, but the details are not yet available.

Pfeiffer said the organization has worked hard to get donations.

“We do a huge appeal via mailing,” Pfeiffer said. “We’re working very hard to get that campaign off the floor.”

Pfeiffer said getting donations isn’t easy considering people have less money because of the difficult economic times.
