Community showed love for ‘The Eddie’

It was both inspiring and humbling to see the support of the community at “The Eddie.”

After my husband’s tragic death on June 25, my children expressed their desire to establish a scholarship fund in their dad’s name to benefit Johnstown High School seniors pursuing careers in math and science. We established the Edward Lakata Memorial Scholarship. A few days later, a group of Ed’s fellow musician friends asked about holding a music festival, with the intention of adding a music scholarship. These events led to planning and holding the amazing music festival we now know as “The Eddie.”

I would like to publicly thank each and every person who played a part in making the event such a success, but that’s not possible. So I will ask that each of you know in your heart we are so grateful for all you contributed.

I do need to thank the organizing committee members: Mike Porter, Tom Hart, Phil Schuyler, Andi Thatcher, Richard Bentley, John Lakata, Austin Lakata and Jeff Houck. Thank you to all the bands, musicians and technicians who volunteered their time to make this event possible. I also would like to thank the following businesses for their extraordinary contributions: Pine Lake Park, Bartyzel Distributors, Toby’s Tents, WATPHOTO.COM, The Bike Works, The Buffalo Bills and Sabres, DeLorenzo Law Firm, Royal Mountain, Ovation Guitars, Perfect Redemption, Beebie Printing and Barney’s Sign. A big thank you also goes out to everyone who donated baskets, those who volunteered, the committee chairs and the businesses that sold pre-sale wristbands.

Last, but not least, thanks to everyone who attended. The event was a success because of you! We set a goal of raising $10,000 for the scholarship, and we not only reached our goal, we exceeded it. Because of everyone involved, the scholarship has a firm foundation on which to grow and provide scholarships for many years to come. We had so many people ask if we would do it again next year, so we have already locked in Aug. 16 as the date for The Eddie 2014 at Pine Lake Park.

On behalf of the Lakata family and the event organizers, I would once again like to personally say “thank you” to everyone who made The Eddie such as success.
