Library group plans gala and auction

GLOVERSVILLE?- Twenty-two offerings donated by 26 area artisans, artists, individuals and businesses will be sold at auction as part of the seventh annual fundraiser of the Friends of the Gloversville Public Library.

The auction and gala reception, “Celebrating the People of the Adirondacks,” will take place Sept. 22 at the library from noon to 2 p.m.

The Friends group has pledged to raise $25,000 at this year’s event and donate the proceeds to the library in order to complete replacement of the library’s windows.

“Our theme is ‘Celebrating the People of the Adirondacks,’ and these donors are certainly people worth celebrating,” auction chairwoman Elizabeth Batchelor said in a news release.

The auction will include a signed copy of Gloversville native Joseph E. Persico’s latest book, “Roosevelt’s Centurions: FDR and the Commanders He Led to Victory in World War II.” Works by returning favorites include a package featuring five local restaurants; artwork by Linda Hinkle, Cindy Sheeler, Paul Petrie, and Ellen Panero; and a glass star from Adirondack Stained Glass Works.

The auction will also include pieces by artists Linda Batchelor, Ruth Crotty and Janet Marie Yeates, all of whom have been displayed at Micropolis Gallery in downtown Gloversville. Fabric artists Deanna Madonna and Eileen Wrightsman have donated a quilt and two scarves, respectively.

Additional offerings include a Great Camp Sagamore package, donated by the Adirondack Wood Floor Company; a holiday door wreath donated and designed by Bill Crankshaw and Wally Hart; a scenic cruise with the Fleischuts; a shopping spree at Mohawk Harvest Cooperative Market; four tickets to Skyheart Studio; a massage at Bodywise Massage; and a golf package which includes 18 holes of golf at all the area courses donated by Genia Meinhold. Rounding out the items available are a handmade wall clock and a computer bag.

Photographs and descriptions of these items are on display in the library and online at The items will not be available for bidding until the day of the celebration. Bidding will start at noon and end at 1:45 p.m. Payment must be made the day of the auction. Cash and checks will be accepted, credit cards will not.

The Friends also are raffling 25 baskets of gifts, crafts, food, and hobby items. The baskets can be seen on the library’s website, and raffle tickets will be available at the library front desk until Sept. 21. Attendance at the event is not required to win a raffle basket.

The gala will be catered by Union Hall Inn and will feature food stations. Reservations for the event may be made at the library or by sending a check to the Friends of the Gloversville Public Library, 58 E. Fulton St., Gloversville, NY 12078. The cost to attend will be $30 per person.
