Rain halts racing at Glen Ridge
FULTONVILLE – The pits and stands were full but Mother Nature did not cooperate with Glen Ridge Motorsports Park Saturday night.
With 15 laps in the book of the featured 60-lap, $4,007.11 “Sowle 60”, heavy rains passed over the speedway forcing race officials to end the race program early.
The modified feature has been rescheduled for Oct. 19 as part of the track’s 602 Nationals race program.
Although the rain postponed the finish of the modified feature, the sportsman main and the Magsarus Racesaver Sprint main, the rookie sportsman, pro stocks, street stocks and Lightning Cruisers were able to complete their feature events.
Blake Schwarting made a last lap pass to edge Bill Fox for the rookie sportsman victory, while Shane Playford was first to the line ahead of Keith Tesiero Jr. in the Lightning Cruiser main.
Bill Knapp picked up the win over Bill Roese in the pro stock feature, while Dave Pope topped Jason Samrov for the street stock win.
The modified feature got off to a rocky start with six cautions and a red flag in the opening 15 laps.
Pat Ward made the most of his outside pole starting spot to lead all of the laps, with Craig Hanson and Mike Mahaney taking turns chasing him.
Bobby Varin had picked his way from 11th to battle with Kenny Tremont for the fourth spot with Jeff Heotzler and Billy Decker following him.
Mahaney brought out one of the late cautions when he stopped with a flat tire and pulled onto the track in front of Ward on the restart.
Ward could not put Mahaney a lap down before the caution flew for for a two-car spin involving Jim Becker and JaMike Sowle.
As the track crews worked to clean up the accident, a brief shower passed over the speedway sending the cars to the pits while track officials ran packer trucks in an attempt to save the fast racing surface. Less than 10 minutes later a harder rain fell, forcing the cancellation of the remainder of the race program.
Racing will return to The Ridge Friday night with a regular race program before taking a break until Oct. 19 for the Dodson Construction-sponsored 602 Nationals event.
