H.S. Football Roundup: Gloversville, Amsterdam open with wins

ROTTERDAM – Asa Barnhill scored four touchdowns to lead Gloversville to a 40-0 win over Mohonasen on Friday.

Barnhill scored on runs of 9, 29, 1 and 38 yards for the Huskies, finishing with 103 yards on eight carries.

Barnhill also completed 4 of 8 passes for 64 yards and an interception.

Quantel McGee rushed for 70 yards on six carries for Gloversville (1-0 overall).

David VanDenabeele returned a blocked punt 55 yards for a touchdown for the Huskies, while Taylor McCredie scored on a 15-yard run.

Gloversville is scheduled to travel to Valatie on?Thursday to face Ichabod Crane at 7 p.m.

Amsterdam 56, Averill Park 44

AVERILL PARK – In a game that featured 100 points, Amsterdam outlasted Averill Park to win its season opener.

Kolbie Glionna had 223 yards rushing and five touchdowns for the Rams and also hauled in five catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Garrett Ryan ran for 191 yards and two touchdowns for Averill Park and caught a 70-yard pass for another touchdown.

Amsterdam (1-0 overall) is scheduled to host Mohonasen next Friday at 7 p.m.

Cobleskill-Richmondville 19, Johnstown 7

RICHMONDVILLE – In its return to the field, Johnstown scored first before coming up short against Cobleskill-Richmondville.

“We gutted it out for three quarters of football, but we gassed out in the fourth,” Johnstown coach Matt Benton said. “We played tough right up until the end.”

Matt Davenport scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards for the Bulldogs (1-0 overall, 1-0 Class B West. Seth Billington added a 5-yard touchdown run for Cobleskill-Richmondville.

Matt Szurek scored the lone touchdown for Johnstown, finding the end zone on a 5-yard run in the first quarter.

Szurek finished with 15 carries 74 yards. He also passed for 64 yards and had an interception on defense.

Adam Caputo had nine carries for 33 yards for Johnstown, while Ryan Auty had seven carries for 24 yards.

Caputo finished with eight solo tackles on defense, while Marino Fabozzi had five solo tackles.

Johnstown is scheduled to host Broadalbin-Perth at Knox Field next Friday at 7 p.m.
