2013 H.S. Girls Tennis Preview: Continuing the Streak
After claiming its 17th straight league title last season, the Amsterdam girls tennis team will take aim at No. 18 in 2013.
The Lady Rams lost three of their top six players to graduation, including Cristiana Johnson, Veronica Marsh and Brittany Durose.
Johnson won the Big 10 individual title last season, while Marsh and Durose teamed up to win the doubles tournament.
Three singles players return for Amsterdam, as juniors Ella Dybas, Audrey Flint and Kristie Kaczmarek are all back in the lineup this season.
Flint and Dybas finished second in the Big 10 doubles tournament last season.
Also returning to the Amsterdam lineup are juniors Caitlin Gannon, Tessa Filiberto and Arizona Santiago and freshman Gabby DiSalvi.
The Lady Rams are off to a strong start this season, posting non-league wins over Schoharie and Scotia-Glenville last Wednesday and Thursday.
Kaczmarek, Flint, Gannon and Di Salvi all won their first two matches for Amsterdam.
Amsterdam, which went 14-2 overall and 10-0 in Big 10 play last season, extended its Big 10 win streak to 170 straight matches. The Lady Rams also reached the semifinals of the Section II Class A Tournament before losing to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.
Rounding out the Amsterdam roster are juniors Madison Janetsky, Amber Richardson, Brooke Dado, Kacie McGillin and Emily Brodie, sophomores Olivia Marsicano and Ruth Luna Martinez, freshmen Gianna Quatrini and Alexis Tirado, and eighth-graders Molly Monge, Prabha Singh, Olivia Fiorillo and Brianna Ziobro.
“We have a young team with no seniors this season,” said Amsterdam coach Maura Dargush, who is entering her third year. “This will make for an exciting two years with this group.”
Monge and Singh are 2-0 in doubles play so far this season for the Lady Rams.
Amsterdam will travel to Bishop Maginn on Wednesday for its first Big 10 contest.
Former Gloversville standout Nate MacGregor takes over for Mike Bruce as coach at Johnstown.
Johnstown’s lone representative on the Foothills Council all-star team last season was Alexis Berry.
Berry, a senior, returns to the team this season along with juniors Angelee Smith and Rachel?DeFransis, and sophomore Alexia Brunetto.
The Lady Bills went 0-12 overall and 0-12 in Foothills Council play last season.
Rounding out the Johnstown roster are sophomore Victoria Baker, and freshmen Mallory DeFransis, Alicia Jordan and Chloe Salisbury.
Johnstown will travel to Queensbury on Wednesday for its season opener.
