Fulton County set to fill positions at DSS
JOHNSTOWN – The Fulton County Department of Social Services this week requested 11 departmental vacancies be filled.
DSS Commissioner Sheryda Cooper requested permission to fill the positions at a meeting of the Board of Supervisors’ Finance Committee. The committee approved that request, along with requests to fill other vacancies among four other county departments.
Seven of the 11 DSS positions needing to be filled are social welfare examiner posts in the temporary assistance and investigative areas, Cooper said.
“This is just moving them around so we can get them all on the [Civil Service] list,” she said.
The committee also approved filling two caseworker positions at salaries of $37,691 annually, and two typist positions at $26,108 annually.
DSS?has had some employee turnover in recent months as the administration of some Medicaid cases is expected to shift from the county to the state. Some local employees have left Social Services?positions in Fulton County for state jobs in advance of the Medicare shift. At some point, the county?may need to eliminate some local DSS?positions as the workload shifts to the state.
Supervisors this week also authorized the backfilling of two transfer station positions, at the request of the Department of Solid Waste.
“They’re both part-time,” said department Deputy Director Cindy Livingston.
The positions each pay $11.55 per hour to start, without benefits. Livingston noted transfer station attendants in Caroga and Ephratah resigned and the positions need to be filled to maintain coverage at the stations.
The committee gave its permission to fill two cook positions at the county jail with two temporary full-time cooks. Sheriff Thomas Lorey said one cook has been out on compensation since March 23, while the other has been on disability since july 12.
County Personnel Director Theresa Souza received permission from the committee to fill a $22,590-per-year personnel clerk position, which is expected to be vacant Sept. 12. The clerk is one of the receptionists at the front desk at the Fort Johnstown Annex handling incoming calls and assisting people coming into the office with county-related personnel questions.
Supervisors also approved filling a part-time assistant public defender vacancy assigned to county Family Court, effective immediately. The position is being advertised at $35,282-per-year. The position became vacant Aug. 22.
