Fit Happens wins GSL championship

GLOVERSVILLE – Fit Happens defeated Antonucci’s Produce Thursday 3-1 to claim the 2013 men’s Gloversville Soccer League championship.

Antonucci’s Produce finished the regular season with a record of 10-1-1 before advancing through the playoffs to the finals for the third straight year, while Fit Happens managed a record of just one game over .500 at 6-5.

Fit Happens drew first blood early in the first period. Nick Maryanapolis caught up with a pass from midfield heading toward the goal and ripped a shot past Antonucci’s goalkeeper Kevin Kucel to put Fit Happens up 1-0.

The lead didn’t last long as Antonucci’s Kris Toscano ripped a ball past Josh Brower that found the back of the net to even the score at one apiece.

Both teams had plenty of chances to score in the middle minutes of the first period. Kucel battled for control of the ball with two Fit Happens forwards, eventually turning away the threat to keep the score deadlocked at one.

Antonucci’s had a chance to take the lead as Toscano found himself with a clear path to the goal. Maryanapolis chased him down and kicked the ball away before Toscano could get off a shot. Fit Happens took used the momentum from the hustle play and tapped in a goal just over the head of Kucel to take a 2-1 lead shortly before the end of the first period.

Fit Happens had a chance to extend their lead early in the second, but Brandon Calandra sent a wide-open shot sailing to the left of the goal from just feet away.

Mike Lomanto played valuable minutes for Antonucci’s in the second period, revitalizing the team with his energy and opening up space for Marco DeLilli. DeLilli dribbled through the Fit Happens defense with ease throughout the second period but couldn’t get a ball in the net. Toscano and Eric Lucas kept feeding DeLilli as the physical nature of the game put DeLilli on his back time after time in the second.

Both teams marched up and down the field for most of the second period only to be turned away at goal, but Calandra found the net late in the period to push Fit Happens’ lead to 3-1.

With one minute left, Toscano bounced a shot off the right post effectively ending any chance of a miracle comeback for Antonucci’s Produce.

Both teams were presented with trophies after the game, signaling the end to yet another season of men’s summer league soccer at Darling Field.
