Drop-Off Day set Saturday
JOHNSTOWN – The Fulton County Department of Solid Waste will conduct a free Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day for the first time in two years from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the county landfill.
The program provides for environmentally-safe disposal of products and keeps them out of the landfill, officials said. Materials collected are hauled away by a contractor for the county.
County Recycling Coordinator Dianne Woske said Wednesday that 211 county residents had registered so far to bring items to the facility, although residents have basically until Saturday to do so.
“We take it right up to that morning,” Woske said. “A lot of people wait until the end.”
This is the first such free hazardous waste collection event the county has conducted since 2011.
Woske said the county had 265 participants in 2011.
The landfill is located at 847 Mud Road in the town. People who want to participate can call the department at 736-5504 to schedule a drop-off time.
Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day is open to county residents and not businesses. It allows pre-registered county residents to drop off potentially hazardous materials they have in their home or garage. This includes a wide range of products, including all kinds of paint, automotive fluids like anti-freeze and old gasoline, and home repair chemicals .
Acceptable items also include: oil-based paints and stains, pool chemicals, household cleaning products, lawn care products (pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides), home maintenance items (thinners, strippers, varnish), kerosene, driveway sealer, photographic chemicals, solvents, and degreasers. Mercury-containing devices will also be accepted.
