Mohawks, Hawkeyes game ends in tie

COOPERSTOWN – The Amsterdam Mohawks and Cooperstown Hawkeyes concluded the regular season with a 4-4 tie. The game was suspended due to darkness at nine innings. Doubleday Field in Cooperstown has no lights. Both teams clearly wanted to continue playing into the 10th inning but the umpires were in charge of the decision.

Cooperstown scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Amsterdam chipped away and eventually evened the score by tallying single runs in each of the last four innings.

John Sansone (Florida State) lead off the ninth inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 4-4. Amsterdam left 16 runners on base in the contest.

All of the statistics from the game are official. There were no winning or losing pitchers. Amsterdam finished the regular season with 11 consecutive wins before the tie and were 15-1 in their last 16 games.

The Mohawks finished the regular season 31-16-1. Cooperstown ended with only one loss in their last seven games going 5-1-1 to finish with an overall record of 18-25-1.

Amsterdam is scheduled to open the playoffs Friday night with Game 1 of the Best of 3 series at Shuttleworth Park at 7:05 p.m.

Amsterdam’s opponent is still to be determined. Mohawk Valley will host Albany on Thursday night in the one-game playoff between second and third place and the winner will advance to the next round to play Amsterdam.

If Thursday’s game at Mohawk Valley gets rained out then the one-game playoff would take place Friday and Amsterdam’s playoff opener would end up getting pushed back to Saturday.

Colonie native Matt Snyder (Temple) will start Game 1 of the playoffs and Rich Vrana (Marist) will start Game 2.
