Property in Gloversville donated for Habitat sites

GLOVERSVILLE – As Habitat for Humanity of Fulton County continues working at the site of its newest project, organizers said the group recently received donations of two plots of land for future work sites.

Habitat for Humanity Website and Volunteer Coordinator Ruth Mandato said Beth and Michael May from the town of Mayfield recently donated two lots at 17 and 19 Northern Terrace for future Habitat projects.

The lots have an estimated value of $9,000 each, Mandato said.

She said the Mays purchased the two lots to build a home on.

However, she said, the couple found a lot in the town of Mayfield they preferred and built their home there.

Mandato said the couple read about what Habitat for Humanity of Fulton County was doing and decided to donate the lots they no longer needed.

Mandato said in the future the local Habitat plans to build two homes for two Fulton County families in need. She said the homes will be designed to fit into the existing neighborhood.

“This donation allows us a foundation for our next project,” Mandato said. “We have to start with either land or a house to rehab. By having this land already in place it gives us a head start on our next project and, most importantly, eliminates the need for us to go out and purchase either a house to rehab or land to build on, therefore lowering the total cost of the project. These savings are passed on to the family and are realized in a lower mortgage payment. This is a wonderful neighborhood and the donation from the Mays of these two lots is just the first step in a new home for our next partner family.”

The Habitat for Humanity of Fulton County’s strategic plan is to renovate or build a new house each year.

Mandato said she expects the group’s current project at 71 Bloomingdale Ave. to be completed around the end of November or early December.

Habitat for Humanity relies on volunteers and donations to renovate and build houses and offers no-interest mortgages for low-income families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford a traditional mortgage.

As part of the arrangement, the family buying the home is required to help and contribute 500 hours to the fundraising effort or construction.
