Reckner picks up win at Glen Ridge
FULTONVILLE – On Friday night at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park, Bobby Varin closed quickly on Elmo Reckner and took the lead in the 35-lap modified feature with seven laps remaining.
However, Reckner did not back down and the veteran modified pilots swapped the lead three times on lap 29 before the caution flew.
The cards fell in Reckner’s favor as he was ahead at the time of the caution and the scorers counted the lap.
It was the break he needed, giving him an open track to fend off Varin for his first feature win of the season at The Ridge.
Joining Reckner with victories Friday night were Brian Pessolano (sportsman), Ryan Burton (rookie sportsman), Rob VanAernam (street stock) and Shane Playford (cruisers). Josh Pieniezek took home his second-straight Racesaver 305 sprint car victory at Glen Ridge.
Bob Vedder and Jim Becker brought the field of 15 modifieds to the green with Vedder taking command.
Reckner quickly made his way to the front from his fifth starting spot and overtook Vedder on lap five. Becker, Varin and Craig Hanson and found their way around Vedder on a lap-seven restart.
Reckner built a solid lead over Becker and Varin as they battled for second before hitting lapped traffic.
Varin broke away from Becker on lap 15 and began reeling in the leader. By lap 25, Varin cut Reckner’s lead to less than five car lengths.
Varin dove under Reckner exiting turn two with eight laps remaining.
When Varin slid up the track between turns one and two, Reckner dove to the bottom and grabbed the lead. Varin charged back to take it back in turn three before Reckner dove to the bottom and slid up to take the point with six laps remaining.
The caution flew as the leaders hit turn one. Varin and Reckner toured the track side-by-side waiting for a decision from the track management as to who would be on the front end when the race went back green.
The decision went in favor of Reckner.
Varin was unable to mount a challenge for Reckner in the closing laps, as he picked up the victory.
Becker came home third followed by Hanson and Richie Price.
Pessolano and Mike Jackson battled for the early lead in the 25-lap sportsman main event.
Pessolano survived a series of restarts to lead every lap and claim the checkers.
John Marsh Jr. came home second with Ivan Joslin third, Greg Pessolano fourth and Kory Wilder edging Jackson for fifth.
Racing returns to The Ridge next Friday with a regular race card on tap featuring twin 15-lap features for the sportsman division.
