A story about flooding in Fort Plain in the June 30 edition requires clarification. The story said Ethel Healey, who died in the flooding, was advised to remain in her home by government officials during flooding. Officials have since said officers had advised Healey to evacuate at one point during the flooding. Jeff Smith, chief of the Fort Plain Fire Department, said in an email, “When the police officers approached her home, she was unwilling at that time to leave based on a neighbor saying that they were staying also. The police officers then moved on to the next house; in a very short amount of time, things changed rapidly to the point that people could not leave until they were rescued properly with boats. When things changed is when they were told to stay in [their] home until a better rescue could be made.”
