Johnstown storage facility could get heated, cooled units
JOHNSTOWN – A city self-storage business is expanding with planned construction of a new 63-unit, climate-controlled building on its remaining property off Snyder Avenue.
City Line Self Storage Inc., of 580 N. Perry St., brought plans and its project application to the city Planning Board Tuesday at City Hall.
The board set a public hearing on the project for 4 p.m. Aug. 6 at City Hall.
Mayor Sarah Slingerland on Tuesday termed the expansion a “nice project.”
Brian Hanaburgh and Ed Bradley – co-owners of the business – explained the new building would be 45 by 120 feet and of design and colors similar to the existing, blue buildings. But this building would be different because the 63 additional self-storage units would have 30 heated units and 33 for cold storage.
“This is something new – heating and air-conditioning and climate-controlled,” said board Chairman Peter K. Smith.
According to the project narrative, to accommodate the heated storage spaces, heating-ventilation-air conditioning units will be placed at each end of the building to control the climate. The interior heated units would be built to meet existing energy codes and heated by propane-fueled furnaces.
City Line Self Storage’s existing 87,000-square-foot parcel is perpendicular to North Perry Street, running along the south side of Snyder Avenue. The proposed additional self-storage building will be on a remaining 19,000-square-foot undeveloped lot.
“This building is quite different from the existing building we have,” Hanaburgh said. “It will be a nice addition to round out that piece of property there.”
He said self-storage customers increasingly want valuable goods protected in a climate-controlled environment.
City Fire Chief Bruce Heberer said the new building meets city codes.
The project would include a 6-foot chain link fence, asphalt paving and landscaping around the building and an electronically-controlled gate.
