Mohawks’ Smith shares PGCBL honors
AMSTERDAM – The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League announce the winners of the PGCBL Player and Pitcher of the Week awards for the week of June 24 through June 30 on Monday. ?Dylan Smith (Auburn) of the Amsterdam Mohawks and Josh Anderson (Florida International) of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles have been selected as the co-PGCBL Players of the Week. James Davitt (Bryant) of the Albany Dutchmen was chosen as the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week. ?Smith (Auburn) is the starting designated hitter for the defending league champion Amsterdam Mohawks. He is the second Mohawk in as many weeks to win a share of the Player of the Week award. Smith helped the Amsterdam Mohawks to a 4-2 record last week. The rising sophomore from Auburn University of Southeastern Conference batted .550 (11-for-20) with 13 RBI, six runs scored, five doubles, two home runs, 22 total bases, a 1.100 slugging percentage and a .545 on-base percentage. Smith topped all league hitters in batting average, RBI, total bases and slugging percentage. He closed the week on a five-game hit streak and reached base safely via hit or hit-by-pitch in all six games. Smith logged four multi-hit, three multi-RBI and three multi-run games as the Amsterdam designated hitter. He struck out just twice.?The Pinson, Ala., native slugged the Mohawks to an 11-3 victory over the Cooperstown Hawkeyes at Doubleday Field on June 26. Smith clubbed a solo home run in the fourth inning as part of back-to-back home runs and then mashed a three-run blast into the left field trees in the seventh inning to give Amsterdam an 8-3 advantage. The following evening, Smith scored two runs in a rain-shortened victory over the Elmira Pioneers. He drilled an RBI double during the decisive sixth inning and came around to score the eventual winning run. The Auburn University product led all Amsterdam swingers with two hits and one RBI in a Friday defeat to Glens Falls. Dylan recorded his third multi-hit and second four-RBI game of the week Saturday night at Utica. He went 3-for-4 with four RBI and one scored as Amsterdam mounted a late-game comeback.
On Sunday, Smith mashed out three more hits, drove in three runs and scored another in a 7-3 rain-shortened win at Mohawk Valley. He is the second Amsterdam hitter in as many weeks to win a share of the PGCBL Player of the Week award. John Nogowski earned the award for the Mohawks last week.
