Celebration slated July 4 at Fort Klock

ST. JOHNSVILLE – An Independence Day celebration and strawberry festival will take place from noon to 4 p.m. July 4 at Fort Klock, located on Route 5.

There will be cakes, ice cream, strawberries and bake sale items, plus a beverage for a fee.

Events at the celebration are scheduled to include:

At 12:30 p.m., Col. James Morrison of the Tryon County Militia will read the rights declarations from the Aug. 27, 1774, meeting of the residents of the Tryon County Palatine District.

At 1 p.m., Eugene Wagner will read the Declaration of Independence followed by a resounding musket salute from the Tryon County Militia.

At 1:30 p.m., the new flagpole at the Fort Klock schoolhouse will be dedicated to all children who have attended a one-room schoolhouse, a news release said. Adam Klock, who attended the school up to fourth grade and donated the flag, Willis Barshield and David Klock will do the dedication.

There will be a fee for guided tours of the Klock’s fortified home, the release said.
