Canajoharie grad O’Neil earns honors

SCHENECTADY – Union College junior pitcher Dane O’Neil, a Canajoharie graduate, was named to the 2013 All-New York Region Team. O’Neil was selected to the second team.

A total of only three Liberty League players were selected, including Union’s Tyler Heck and O’Neil, among the 42 players named to the three teams in the region.

O’Neil was named the 2013 Liberty League Pitcher of the Year. He was the ace of the pitching staff, going 6-1, with an ERA of 1.11 and holding opposing batters to a .206 average. O’Neil pitched six consecutive complete games from the start of the season which included three shutouts. Additionally, O’Neil has been amongst the best in NCAA Division III as he was ranked as high as third in earned run average and finished sixth in the nation. He has been an instrumental part to the success of the pitching staff this season, a news release said, setting the tone in each of the series as the No. 1 starter. He walked just 16 batters in 57 innings and gave up 42 hits in 57 innings. O’Neil’s ERA led the Liberty League and he was tied for second in victories.

Union finished with a school record of 26 wins, 26-11 overall, and won the regular season title with a 20-7 record. Union reached the Liberty League Championship Round and hosted the tournament.
