Ronald D. Shields

Ronald D. “Ron” Shields of Johnstown, N.Y., passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. He was 70.

Born on Sept. 15, 1942, in St. Albans, N.Y., he was the son of the late Frederic and Eunice (Brett) Shields. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers.

Ron married the love of his life, Gail Mathie, 43 years ago in Huntington, L.I. He spent six years in the Navy and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis on the USS Harris as part of the blockade of Cuba. Ron was always very patriotic and loved his country. He was a member of the Johnstown Moose Club. He enjoyed going on trips and venturing into new territory. Ron was a New York Giants fan. He also was a fan of Jeff Gordon and NASCAR and liked going to the races in Glen. Ron loved his life and the people in it.

In addition to his wife, Gail, survivors include his grandbabies, Heidi and Hannah, whom he adored, and their mother, Kerry Roth along with his nieces and nephews in Texas, Colorado and Long Island; his pals, Elaine Burgoyne and Barbara Staalesen; and his dogs, Sophie and Frannie, who were his constant and loving companions.

There will be no public calling hours.

Graveside services with military honors will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville.
