Search for fishermen enters 3rd day
BROADALBIN – The search continued in the Great Sacandaga Lake for a third day today for a father and son who went missing over the weekend.
Mark Richards, 51, and his son Brent Richards, 24, both of Broadalbin, were reported missing Sunday after they failed to return from fishing on the lake Saturday, authorities said.
The two parked their vehicle on MacVean Road on Saturday morning and launched their small boat off that road, Fulton County Undersheriff Kevin Lenahan said.
The search for the two men started Monday.
The area of the search is near the Broadalbin Boat Launch off Lakeview Road, officials said.
The pair’s vehicle was found on MacVean Road, and items that would have been in their boat were found floating near shore, Lenahan said Tuesday.
Lures, bobbers and a bait bucket were among the items found, Lenahan said.
Authorities have not recovered the men’s 8- to 10-foot jon boat.
State police dive teams are helping with the search today, state police Sgt. Matt Murray of the Mayfield barracks said.
Murray said authorities today were planning to search with sonar attached to boats. They are moving in a grid-search pattern, he said.
Murray said the search would expand to other parts of the lake.
He said he does not know how close authorities are to finding the missing men or their boat.
“I couldn’t speculate on that,” he said.
