Authorities search for missing fishermen on Sacandaga

BROADALBIN – Authorities continued to search this morning for a father and son who went missing over the weekend on the Great Lake Sacandaga Lake.

The search for the two men started Monday.

Mark Richards, 51, and his son Brent Richards, 24, both of Broadalbin, parked their vehicle on Macvean Road on Saturday morning and launched their small boat on private property or a right of way off Macvean Road, Fulton County Undersheriff Kevin Lenahan said.

The area is near the Broadalbin Boat Launch off Lakeview Road, officials said. The two were reported missing Sunday night.

Their vehicle was found on Macvean Road, and items that would have been in their boat were found floating near shore, Lenahan said.

Lures, bobbers and a bait bucket were among the items found, Lenahan said.

Lenahan said the search Monday in a bay area near the Broadalbin Boat Launch continued until 8 p.m. before boats were called off.

Officials were using boats from the Sheriff’s Department and the state police, and a state police helicopter.

Lenahan said searchers found no boat or victims.

He said the boat may have sank. Lenahan said the boat was an 8- to 10-foot jon boat with a flat bottom.

He said the boat had an electric trolling motor.

Lenahan did not know the lake conditions when the two men may have been on the water.

Lenahan said he did not know what the pair had brought out with them when they went fishing.

He said the two had not been drinking alcohol.

This morning, divers from state police were planning to help with the search, said state Trooper Tim Hard.

Around 9 a.m. today, searchers were waiting for fog to lift before resuming the search.

Lisa Pfeiffer, who lives across the street from the Broadalbin Boat Launch, said she first heard about the disappearance Monday morning.

“We walked down around 1 p.m. and there were a few boats going in and out,” Pfeiffer said.

“I came over here around 9:30 a.m. and there were just some state police boats in the bay,” said Kevin Pfeiffer, Lisa’s husband.
