Alex Smyrychynski (Dad, PopPop, Kippy, Kip, Al) passed away on Thursday, May 16. Al was born on June 14, 1924, in Spring Valley, N.Y. He was drafted into WWII and served honorably in the European Theater for four years. After discharge, he returned to Lederle Laboratories, where he had worked since age 16, and from which he retired after 43 years. He and his wife, Lucille, raised their family in New City. In 1985, they retired to Caroga Lake, N.Y., and enjoyed golfing and socializing with a host of new and very dear friends.
Alex was predeceased by his wife, Lucille (Kelly) in 2005; and by brothers, Mike and Jim; and sisters, Helen VanDerbeek Carlano and Christine (Fidge) Robbins.
He is survived by his children, Mary and Rick Gilmour of Valley Cottage, N.Y., and Alexis and Orlando Velez of Salisbury Mills, N.Y.; and by his three grandchildren, the lights of his life, Derick (Nikki Preston) of Pomona, N.Y., Chris (Jenn Douglas) of Camp Hill, Pa., and Katherine Velez of Salisbury Mills; also by a sister, Anne (Curly) Tucker of Spring Valley; and a brother, George (Yut) of Summerfield, Florida.
The family will receive visitors at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, Main Street, New City, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 19. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20. Interment will follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
