Show respect for historian
“Character builds slowly, but it can be torn down with incredible swiftness” is a quote from American author Faith Baldwin. Upon hearing the allegations about Peter Betz this week, I came across this quote and thought it was appropriate to share.
Peter has been an asset to this community for many years: a man of character, a friend and colleague to many, as well as a consummate professional. His knowledge of the area and willingness to share that talent and his time in support of a number of organizations in this community should be commended and celebrated. I witnessed this firsthand, just recently, as he gave of his time selflessly in support of our efforts to document and promote the rich history of Parkhurst Field.
It is easy to sit back and judge, or worse, to take part in the tearing down of others. As Lawrence Lovasik, a priest and founder of a secular institute devoted to charitable work for the sick, elderly and needy once stated, “It is just as cowardly to judge an absent person as it is wicked to strike a defenseless one. Only the ignorant and narrow-minded gossip, for they speak of persons instead of things.”
I ask everyone to respect the man who has given this area so much of himself over the years and let the judicial process handle the rest.
