Robert Garon Milstein

Robert Garon “Bob” Milstein, died at 89 from a brief illness on Thursday, May 2, 2013.

He grew up in Gloversville, N.Y. and entered Harvard in 1941 where he captained the swim team. After the Battle of the Bulge, the Army approved his third attempt to enlist despite heart damage. Discharged as a second lieutenant, he became a political correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor before joining the Shoe Corporation of America. With his promotion to CEO of the Mid-States Shoe Manufacturing Company, he moved to Milwaukee where he raised his four children with his first wife, Elaine Schiff. After U.S. shoe manufacturing declined, he built new careers in public relations and commercial real estate brokering in Palm Beach, where he met Vicki Cohen. They married and moved to the Lake George region.

A lifetime of avid walking and swimming kept him in remarkable health until a hip repair curbed his mobility. Memories of his humor, articulateness, resourcefulness and optimism are cherished by his friends, four children, seven grandchildren and his two wives, who he described as the best women on earth.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Jewish National Fund/Plant a Tree ( or Golden Rescue South Florida (
