Haldane wins Bo Baker Tournament title

FORT PLAIN – Haldane of Section I took home the title at the Bo Baker Tournament at Phillips Field in Fort Plain on Saturday.

Haldane, which is ranked 11th in the latest state Class C poll, defeated Dolgeville in the championship game 13-1 and Hoosick Falls in the first round 7-1.

In the championship game, John Rotando had two doubles and three runs scored for Haldane, which reached the state Class C title game last season. Kenny Doxey had a single, double, three RBIs and two runs scored for Haldane, while Ryan Koval had two singles and two RBIs.

Danny Fox had a double and scored the lone run for Dolgeville (4-6 overall), while Reid Johnson had an RBI single.

In the consolation game, Hoosick Falls cruised to a 13-1 win over host Fort Plain.

The Panthers also posted a 1-0 win over the Hilltoppers in the semifinals of the Section II Class C tournament last season.

Randy Tutunjian had three singles and three runs scored for Hoosick Falls, while Billy Pine had a double, triple and two runs scored.

Kealan Hitt pitched a four-hitter to earn the win on the mound for the Panthers.

Zach Sweet had a double and two runs scored for Fort Plain, while Drew Fureno and Dakota Nemecek each had singles.

In the first round, Haldane registered a 7-1 win over Hoosick Falls to reach the finals.

Stephen Zalys was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Haldane, while Justin Kaufman was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Ryan Koval and Matt Balducci combined on a one-hitter for Haldane.

In the other first-round contest, Dolgeville edged Fort Plain 7-6.

The Blue Devils, who lost 7-2 to West Canada Valley on Friday, scored five times in the top of the seventh to earn the win.

Josh Gross hit a bases-loaded triple in the seventh for Dolgeville to tie the game and later scored the go-ahead run.

Darrin Darling was 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Blue Devils, Johan Doerrer was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double, and Fox was 2-for-4.

Darling also earned the win on the mound for Dolgeville, allowing nine hits, striking out three and walking none in six innings of work. Doerrer earned the save, walking one and striking out one in one inning of work.

Sweet was 3-for-3 for Fort Plain, which topped Saratoga Central Catholic 5-2 on Friday at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy in a matchup of Western Athletic Conference North Division rivals. Trent Douglas added a 2-for-3 effort at the plate for the Hilltoppers.

Fort Plain (12-2 overall) will host Mayfield on Monday at 4:30 p.m., while Dolgeville will travel to Mohawk on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
